I thought of this idea after reading a news story online about the most common injury for soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan is Traumatic Brain Injury as a result of the roadside bombs.
Not sure how reasonable it is but I was thinking that maybe you could install some type of patches on the outside of the helmet that would expel a number of airbags that were rapidly inflated upon sensing an impact (pressure switches/sensors). Kind of in the same fashion that automobile airbags work.
It may not necessarily protect them from the shrapnel associated with the exploding bomb but it would soften the soldier's landing in the event that he/she is thrown by the explosion.
